abduction by chocolate aliens, yet again.

my little choco alienMy body brain was experiencing a massive take-over from the chocolate aliens. “We must have chocolate and now daddy!”, they laser screened into every cell & pore of my body. Clearly they were gender confused, but it’s not the first time I’ve been mistaken for the other sex. [Why, just the other day, the PGE phone rep called me “sir” at the end of every sentence. No doubt, dutifully following their do-not-think-outside-of-the-box script.] Well, the car I drive must have been programmed simultaneously, and proceeded without my doing, to drive straight to the Trader Joe’s, a few blocks away. I honestly do not know how it happened. Was not present, but still won.

Meanwhile, back at my new home/girlcave, I surveyed the depths of my TJ’s boldly designed, sailing the seven seas themed eco-shopping bag. WTF? Boxes of kona-coffee dipped cookies, chocolate truffles, and chocolate bars appeared on the kitchen counter. Huh. “How did all that get here? Am I that low in magnesium?”, I mused. The proponents of the 5th food group, chocolate, had no doubt, been powering that alien space ship.

Without thinking, I automatically proceeded to read the labels, as any good student of nutrition that has been well-trained [or positively brain-washed] will do. Oh Oh! I pondered and continued to peruse the ingredients list. “Why does every bloody boxed food item insist on containing soy lecithin |ˈlesəTHin| [less-a-thin]. Next, came the instant barrage of questions, pummeling my brainiac nutrition & health obsessed brainy brain brain, like a serious North Shore 15 foot towering winter wave about to keel over me. OMG. Is is GMO? What actually IS soy lecithin? How do you actually pronounce that word? Why is it always soy? What’s the alternative? Is it good, bad, ugly? Is it really “all good?” Who coined that phrase anyways? Was it Tupac? [RIP] Snoop? Is it GMO? Is it GMO? Is it GMO?!!! It doesn’t say organic, it must be GMO! Shit.” Maybe I can call someone, I thought to myself. Ah, like who, the GMO police? No 800 number on the boxes, no number found on the website. Oh, the website! An hour later I resurfaced, triumphant. And Spanish dancers, this is what I found:

According to Trader Joe’s website, [which btw, has excellent basic nutrition guides for dummies & not-so-dummies], their home grown private label contains: no GMO’s, no MSG, no partially hydrogenated oils [fake, mafia bad fats], no synthetic colors, no artificial flavor flavs, no preservatives. “Since 2001, we do not allow GMO ingredients in our private label products.” Yahoo!!! HCIT! [how cool is that? way cool.]

Somehow, I managed to wake up from the chocolate induced stupor, and well, at least the cookies, ended up getting tossed. [No silly, meaning, in the garbage…ah, compost, that is.]

Quick nutrition lesson 101: Lecithin is any group of yellow-brownish fatty substances occurring in animal and plant tissues. It is composed of various phospholipids such as phosphatidyl choline [PC]. It is found in all cellular organisms; one of the major components of the cell membrane. As an added ingredient in foods, it is usually made from soybean oil. Thanks to the EU regulations on GMO’s, a gradual switch is being made to other sources like sunflower oils. In the US, it has GRAS status [generally regarded as safe]. In the EU, it is labelled in foods as a food additive [E322]. What this all means: It is highly processed. Always best to eat the food source directly. Eat your [organic, grass-fed & pastured] egg yolks people! It is also found in fish eggs & fish roe. The Euro’s are rocking it when it comes to GMO labeling; and the US, has a long way to go baby.

the art of non-perfection

okay. this is about letting go of perfection. this blog is not quite organized. it isn’t the look i really love. i’ve been languishing over a new format, a new look, and taken no action…yet, every day at least a million words or so go tickering* thru my head, like the nyc times square news feed on the jumbotron, grasping desperately for attention, practically doing circus tricks begging to get on the page.

i was trained by a master perfectionist. i am talking the best of the best. what a great lesson now, to take the opposite path, learning the art of letting go of perfection. tony robbins, for one, is big on that. it is definitely this feeling of being up on the high dive and getting ready to jump, doing all sorts of prep to jump, [you know, like shopping for the right suit, organizing things that have nothing to do with the actual event etc. ad nauseam] and then you just gotta. you step up and fly. omg, it can be so scary! but scary with benefits. one thing i am noticing: more actually gets done! wooohoo! this is a gold medal kinda feeling of accomplishments in simple, modern day-to-day living. the truth is that at some point soon, we have to say, “ok, this is done. it is complete. it is good enough. and might as well throw in, “i am good enough”, while we’re at it.

so, here it is. my blog in all it’s quirkiness, imperfections, specialized grammaticalness [yep, that is actually a noun] & spellings, made up words and goofy style. one of my dreams is to be a published & successful writer, author, blogger. so, the q remains: why am i not doing this on a daily basis. why are any of us not doing, not getting to the number one things on our bucket list? why does it become more like the ‘duck-it’ list? as in, oooh, get out of the way, i’ve got too much in the inbox already, get in line, take a number! kinda thing. i am not one to go deeply into nature of ‘why’. it can be an obsessive waste of time. notice. observe. call it what it is. appreciate. and then, just do it.

just did it. ha ha ahaaa!

avec l’amour,

*a word i made up. you get the gist, oui?

in the beginning…

was the word…and the word(s) in 2012 are ‘just do it’. whatever it is that feeds your soul, that you’ve been putting off, do it now!

hi lovely peeps! it’s been way too long since i wrote the first (and last) blog entry. so, it’s just time to get a moo-ve on, groove on. i’ve been wanting to join my many worlds, the beloved yoga community in deutschland that i helped pioneer this last decade, my students & friends across europe & the globe, with this new, growing & evolving community in the fabulous san francisco bay area. a case of the old west meets the far-out, wild west? perhaps. however, i’m renaming it, reclaiming it ‘far-in’. (more on that in a future post).

i want to connect all those that were a part of that burgeoning & precious sangha to this now path of radiant health & nutrition, with my new adventure, a company i’m building called ‘joie de v’. i am growing it slowly, in the fashion of this evolving ‘slow’ movement. eat slow, live slow, love slow. that is the mantra, the new calling for so many of us who are or have been addicted to burn more (of our core (jing) energy), be better (cuz we are never good enough), run faster (be number 1), and a do more (by all means necessary) kind of lifestyle. you know it: ‘do’ more yoga (read: asana which is NOT exactly yoga), more work, more money, more email, more fun, more friends, more facebook, more friends on facebook, more everything. the who said it succinctly ‘too much of anything is too much for me. too much of everything gets too much for me.’ and in the end, it really ends up ironically being less of everything n’est-ce pas? and then we just want more again, and so the hamster wheel goes…

as we know, this only works for so long. and it is actually just a matter of time before the crash & burn, (and yes, eventually die), happens. it happened to me. crashed & hard. had a dream. built it. gave everything to it. gave it all for the vision, which i loved. it was amazing. beyond my wildest imagination. the problem is, you cannot, no matter how much you love something, how dedicated, committed, devoted, on track, intentional, inspired, supported etc. (you get the pic) you are, you just cannot give all your jing away. it is not better to burn out and fade away.

in chinese medicine, jing is our primal essence as human beings. we are born with a limited amount of jing energy. it’s stored in the kidneys and defines our basic constitution. it is intimately connected to the growth and maturation of each individual. once it’s used up, so are you. after numerous years of upwards of 60, 70, 80+ hour work weeks, the body/mind/spirit gives in & up. it’s called dis-ease. high stress is absolutely unsustainable, it is not in our true nature to be a slave to anything, even your well-intentioned, well-oiled, well-loved dream.

how we live does indeed profoundly affect us. how do we live? what is our vision for our one wild & precious life, as the poet mary oliver so eloquently called it. what is it you’ve been putting off that you know would make the best shift in your life towards radiant health -a truly healthy, happy life? we all already know. so listen inside, find the inner wisdom whispering (or maybe by now, loudly carousing you) to your heart and allow it to become your reality, before life just takes over you. just take the first step. and give room for it all. the shadow and the light. the dark, the bright. the entire enchilada. whole view, rather than hole view.

may the words on the page inspire you, guide you, remind you to take right action, to live, eat, speak, breathe and be your truth and nothing but your authentic truth self. hari om tat sat!
